Elena Tonra, best known as the frontwoman of London three-piece Daughter, has gone solo. Under the moniker of Ex:Re, her brand new project, she has just shared the debut single – ‘Romance’ – and announced the release of the first, eponimous, LP for November 30th, via 4AD.

The new single, accompanied by an official video, fills us with anticipation for the full-length, marking a substantial drift from the typical soundscapes of Daughter to unexplored, desolated lands. I would dare describing Tonra’s ‘Romance’ as some sort of spectral pop, where guitars interlace with a piano and Elena’s soothing vocals. A sense of melancholia permeates the space, anticipating an album which, Tonra stated, “is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there’s either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence.”

Welcome, Ex:Re.
