Oxford-born Richard Walters marks his return with a new powerful single, ‘Starlight’. Following the release of his fourth studio album, ‘A.M.’ in 2016, the artist has now unveiled a glacial new number that draws from elements typical of Youth Lagoon, Keaton Henson and Elliot Smith.
‘Starlight’ is an intimate track; it builds from piano and vocals into a vortex of strings and guitars, and showcases some sort of fragility, as Walters himself explains when talking about the new single: “2016 was a strange year… I became a father in the spring, which was (and continues to be) an incredible, life-affirming experience. Then, towards the end of the year, I sadly lost a close friend to cancer, so it felt like 2016 was bookended by these events, one utterly amazing and the other utterly heartbreaking, but both leaving me with an enormous, newfound respect for life and time. ‘Starlight’ is, I suppose, about that sense of nostalgia I felt at those two points, looking back but with one eye on the future.”
